Anxiety disorders

Generalised anxiety

Anxiety is an uncomfortable feeling of fear that is a normal emotional response to danger (e.g. the onset of exam period or tense peer situations). Anxiety becomes a concern when the fear or worry becomes constantly present and gets in the way of everyday life. People who experience this kind of anxiety find it difficult to stop worrying and may experience physical symptoms such as trembling, sweaty palms, muscle tension and racing heartbeat. People often report that the worry reduces their ability to enjoy and participate in life. Many people who suffer from this level of anxiety use drugs and alcohol to cope and this often leads to further problems.
