MoodGym is an online Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and
Interpersonal Therapy based program developed by ANU, found to be
useful both as a preventative program and as a self help tool for
people with depressive symptoms. It is intended to assist people
experiencing mild to moderate levels of depression or anxiety -
empowering the user with cognitively based strategies to better
manage emotional distress.
The program is an interactive, web-based program designed for
prevention and/or treatment of depression and anxiety MoodGym
consists of 5 modules, in an interactive format consisting of
assessments, relaxation recordings, and an online workbook.
- Module 1 - Introduces the sites characters
- Module 2 - Dysfunctional ('warpy') thoughts
- Module 3 - Behavioural methods
- Module 4 - Assesses life events, relaxation training
- Module 5 - Problem solving, relationships
Each module takes 20-40 minutes to complete. There is evidence
from a number of clinical trials that MoodGYM is associated with
decreased depressive symptoms. A recent randomised controlled trial
in schools demonstrated that the program is effective in preventing
new cases of anxiety.
